Godfrey sits along the cliffs overlooking the Mississippi River, with the 300 acre Cora Hutchinson Bird Sanctuary and John M. Olin Nature Preserve. In the fall the town hosts The Great Godfrey Maze, a giant outdoor maze formed from rows of corn. During the last weekend of September, you can attend the popular Heritage Days on the Goshen Trail.
The town owns its name to its founder, Benjamin Godfrey, a Massachusetts sea captain who arrived as a small child to Alton on a steamboat. Over time, he established a business in Alton and a family, and then bought thousands of acres north in order to found the Monticello Seminary, with the hope of given his daughters and other girls a formal education.
That seminary is not the Lewis and Clark Community College, an ode to another important piece of Godfrey history, as the Lewis and Clark expedition was launched from here in 1804.
The Godfrey Memorial Chapel was established in 1854 to commemorate for Benjamin Godfrey who made Alton prosperous. Associated to other surviving Greek Revival churches in Illinois, this building certainly stands on its own. It's one of Illinois' impressive Civil War structures. The chapel was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Illinois in 1979. It's one of the six most genuine copies of New England church architecture beyond the North Eastern United States.

Its board and staff have worked to create awareness and appreciation of nature through restoration, education, and preservation. This institute provides unique places for the public to experience the diversity of the Riverbend area with its prairies, wetlands, and forests.
And to honor the 15-year old Shoshone Indian who joined the Corps of Discovery in the Mandan Villages, there's a statue built in the Lewis and Clark Community College. The figure was sculpted from a copper, manganese, and bronze mixture by Glenna Goodacre who also created the design of the new Sacagawea dollar.
