A place steeped with American history, Alton sits on several cultural and geographical crossroads in southern Illinois. It’s the largest town in the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway area, and although there weren’t any major battles during the Civil War, it nonetheless had an important role to play during it.
It’s the hometown of a jazz legend, of the tallest man in history, and reminders of the importance of freedom and free speech. And nature blessed the town as well with spectacular limestone cliffs over the Mississippi.
You’ll have much to see and do in this town, which is also a part of the St. Louis, Missouri Metropolitan Area and near other worthwhile areas.
